A Little Perspective on Khan Academy Numbers
It was great to wake to the news this morning of Khan Academy’s $5M grant to extend their platform and increase their content. To date, they’re seeing some encouraging numbers:
Khan just announced that the platform is seeing 39 million pageviews and 3.5 million unique users per month. That 3.5 million unique users is up 309 percent year-over-year. Khan Academy’s free lessons have been viewed more than 82 million times on YouTube.
The potential impact of their mission is tremendous and the buzz around them is well warranted.
But let’s put their numbers into a bit of perspective.
This kid, the one who has been lip syncing over pop tunes for about a year, has over 333 million views on YouTube. In fact, their 82 million views don’t even put them anywhere close to being a top viewed channel on YouTube.
WIth all the industry back slapping and stage time with Bill Gates, they still have a tremendous amount of work to do in making their content appealing to a broader audience and delivering on their promise.
As a single data point, in it’s current form the content nor the platform appeal to my kids. Despite multiple attempts in various categories, both self guided and dad enforced, it simply fell flat.
I hope this $5M gets them closer to fulfilling their promise for a much wider audience.
